A water orb is made by casting Charge Water Orb on the water obelisk (requires level 56 magic, 30 water runes, 3 cosmic runes and an uncharged orb), granting 66 Magic experience. The obelisk is on Water Obelisk Island and can be reached via Taverley Dungeon. When leaving, a one-way grappling shortcut from the island to Catherby can be accessed (which requires level 36 agility, 39 ranged, and 22 strength and 49 construction to build the Hidey-hole). When the player has an unpowered orb in their inventory while casting the spell there, the unpowered orb becomes a water orb. It can be attached to a plain battlestaff to make a water battlestaff, giving 100 experience if the player has a Crafting level of 54 or higher.

Water orbs are also the tertiary ingredient in infusing Hydra pouches.

Players may receive water orb from opening a box of summoning ingredients, a possible reward from the Familiarisation Distraction and Diversion.
